Isabella and the Cerrado

When Isabella was a little girl, she lived in a place called the Cerrado, in Brazil.

The Cerrado is like an amazing patchwork quilt of dry grasslands, wetlands and forest areas.

Lots of interesting creatures live there, like the giant armadillo.

The giant anteater.

And the maned wolf.

Isabella’s father used to take her walking in the Cerrado so she could see its beauty, and he would show her how to find and pick tasty fruits.

This incredible place is changing though. Lots of the forests and grasslands that Isabella walked in as a little girl have been cut or burnt down.

They’ve been replaced with fields of soy.

Soy is used in a lot of countries, including the UK, to feed farm animals.

Half of the Cerrado has already gone. This makes Isabella very sad.

It’s not too late though. We can still save the beautiful Cerrado.

  • Its tail has developed so it can grip on to trees. It uses it a lot like another arm.

  • Kinkajous are mad about fruit! They also eat some flowers, leaves and termites.

  • Home

  • They live high up in the trees in most parts of South America, from Mexico to Bolivia, as well as in the Brazilian Amazon.

  • Nobody’s quite sure how many kinkajous there are.

  • Biggest threat

  • The kinkajou is not a threatened species, but it is still affected by deforestation and hunting.

  • That’s a fact!

  • Kinkajous can turn their feet backwards so that they can run in either direction along narrow branches!

  • The whitish / yellowish rings that encircle their eyes, resembling large eyeglasses. Not all bears have these markings though.

  • Size

  • The average spectacled bear is 1.5-2m tall and weighs 140-175kg.

  • They eat most things, but mostly fruits and certain plants. Sometimes they eat meat, but not very often.

  • Home

  • They are very shy and they live away from humans, high in the Northern Andean cloud forests, around 1,800m-3,200m above sea level.

  • Nobody’s really sure how many there are. There could be anything from 5,000 to 30,000.

  • Biggest threat

  • Habitat loss and illegal hunting.

  • That’s a fact!

How to make it

    Print out the greetings card templates.

  2. 02How to make it

    Cut the templates out. If you want to make your greetings cards sturdier, stick the cut-out templates to some card using glue. Once the glue has dried, fold the greetings cards in half.

    Colour them in with pens, or paint them. Your African animal greetings cards are complete!

    You could check out our e-cards instead if you want to send a card to somebody without printing anything.

    Why not copy some smaller versions of these to use as counters for your African Adventure boardgame in this month’s Go Wild magazine? You will need to use FSC card instead of paper and create a bigger tab at the bottom so they can stand up.

How to make it

  1. 01How to make it

    Draw some African animals on the card in pencil. They need to have a tab at the bottom, so draw that as well so you remember it later. Animals you might like to draw could include lions, giraffes, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos and zebras. If you don’t want to draw your own animals, you can print out the templates we’ve prepared for you here, and use them instead.

  2. 02How to make it

    Cut them out, making sure they have a tab on the bottom. You might need an adult to help you with this bit.

    Colour the animals in.

  4. 04How to make it

    Take the lid of the shoe-box and turn it on its side. Decorate the inside of the box with your pens or paints, so it looks like an African landscape.

  5. 05How to make it

    Bend the tabs on the animals back and glue them to the bottom of the box, toward the back, so that the animals stand upright.

  6. 06How to make it

    Step back and admire your handiwork – a shoe-box safari.

  • Their manes – the impressive fringe of long hair that encircles their heads. Only male lions have these.

  • Size

  • Head and body are 1.4 – 2m and they weigh 120 to 191kg.

  • Lions are meat-eaters. Most of their diet is made up of antelopes, zebra and wildebeest, which they hunt for in groups, but they will eat almost any animal, from rodents to a rhino. They also scavenge, scaring off other predators (like hyenas) from their food and taking it for themselves.

  • Home

  • Lions are found in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa. They are very adaptable and live in all kinds of different habitats. The only habitats you won’t find them in are tropical rainforest and the middle of the Sahara desert.

  • Nobody’s really sure how many there are, but they’re decreasing. There are likely to be between 29,000 and 47,000.

  • Biggest threat

  • The main threats to lions are hunting (mostly when people hunt them to protect their families and livestock), loss of prey and habitat loss.

  • That’s a fact!

  • Lions are the only cats which live in large groups called ‘prides’.
