Secret tusks! Males rarely develop long tusks, while those of adult females may be so short that they are hidden by the upper lip.
They are the smallest of the Asian elephants, measuring 1.7-2.6m at the shoulder.
They eat green vegetation, mostly bananas, ginger, young bamboo and the leaves of a number of vines.
They can be found in lowland forest in Sumatra, western Indonesia, close to rivers.
Around 2,400 – 2,800 in the wild.
Illegal poaching and habitat loss. The destruction of forest so that land can be used for farming instead is a particular problem.
They can eat up to 200kg of food a day – that’s about the same weight as 2 and a half adult men!
