Sumatran elephant

  • Secret tusks! Males rarely develop long tusks, while those of adult females may be so short that they are hidden by the upper lip.

  • Size

  • They are the smallest of the Asian elephants, measuring 1.7-2.6m at the shoulder.

  • Favourite food

  • They eat green vegetation, mostly bananas, ginger, young bamboo and the leaves of a number of vines.

  • Home

  • They can be found in lowland forest in Sumatra, western Indonesia, close to rivers.

  • Current population

  • Around 2,400 – 2,800 in the wild.

  • Biggest threat

  • Illegal poaching and habitat loss. The destruction of forest so that land can be used for farming instead is a particular problem.

  • That’s a fact!

  • They can eat up to 200kg of food a day – that’s about the same weight as 2 and a half adult men!
