Current population
20,000-25,000.
Biggest threat
Climate change is melting the sea ice so we need to hunt earlier each year, and it’s forming later. This means we now have a shorter feeding season in which to build up our fat reserves.
That’s a fact!
I have an excellent sense of smell and can smell seals under 1 metre of snow and from almost 1 km away.
